Teeth Whitening Q & A

What causes teeth to become dingy, yellowed and stained?

The most common causes of tooth staining and discoloration are the foods and beverages we consume. Many common foods like coffee, tea, berries, red wine and deeply-colored sauces contain pigments that stain teeth, and food coloring in prepared food can also cause discoloration. Foods high in certain acids, including citrus fruits, can temporarily cause enamel to soften, making it easier for stains to penetrate. Tobacco use is also a common cause yellow or brown stains, and of course, poor oral hygiene habits including not having teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis can also contribute to a dingy, dull appearance.

What kind of whitening system does The Bronx Dental Center provide?

The Bronx Dental Center uses a tray-based teeth whitening system that patients can use in the comfort of their homes at their own convenience. Trays are custom made for each patient using dental impressions to create molds of the teeth. The impressions are sent to a lab where the trays are created out of comfortable, medical-grade materials. During whitening treatment, patients fill the trays with the special whitening gel and wear the trays over their teeth for a specific period of time each day, for roughly two weeks. The custom design of the trays ensures the gel reaches all the tooth surfaces and prevent leakage of the gel for more consistent results. At the end of treatment, most patients report smiles that are four to eight shades lighter and brighter.

Will teeth whitening make my teeth sensitive?

One of the advantages of having teeth professionally whitened instead of using an over-the-counter product is that tiny defects like cracks and small areas of decay can be corrected prior to treatment to decrease the risk of sensitivity. Tray use can also be adjusted for patients with very sensitive teeth. Any sensitivity that does occur will resolve soon after treatment.
